(SIMSBURY, Conn., August 5, 2024) — McLean Life Plan Community in Simsbury, Connecticut, held a flag-raising ceremony today to celebrate its reaccreditation by Purple Flag for Dementia Care™. This marks the first time in Purple Flag history that a community has achieved reaccreditation.

McLean pioneered the Purple Flag program and became the first community to receive accreditation in February 2020, establishing itself as a leader in senior care excellence. However, due to the pandemic, the symbolic flag-raising ceremony had to be postponed. Since then, Purple Flag has seen tremendous growth nationwide.

About Purple Flag

Purple Flag for Dementia Care is an accreditation program with established standards for assessing a senior care organization’s ability to provide collaborative care in a safe, functional and respectful environment. The program was initially developed through a joint effort between the Institute for Senior Living (ISLE) and the Connecticut Assisted Living Association (CALA) to ensure senior living and memory care residents with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia receive the highest quality care and enhanced quality of life. Since its establishment, Purple Flag has grown to evaluate all levels of senior care and provider environments.

As part of the reaccreditation process, McLean had to demonstrate adherence to 60 best practice standards and training outlined by Purple Flag for services provided to individuals with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. McLean is the first among the 31 Purple Flag communities and counting to have met the standards to elevate care quality for all residents a second time.

Words from the Event

Ann Pavano speaks at the flag-raising event.

“We pursued reaccreditation to maintain the care consistency, team collaboration and morale the Purple Flag program has provided our community,” said Ann Pavano, Director of Assisted Living and Resident Resources at McLean Life Plan Community. “Overall, reaccreditation will continue to strengthen dementia care in our industry as we work together with other like-minded organizations to set the gold standard.”

“Purple Flag was delighted to honor McLean in early 2020 as the very first accredited senior living community in the country, and we are equally pleased to honor McLean for their leadership as the first to become reaccredited,” said Christopher Carter, Purple Flag CEO and President, CALA. “Reaccreditation by McLean and others to be announced soon represents a great statement as to the success of the Purple Flag program.”
